Benin: the country of voodoo

During the Age of Exploration, Europeans became aware of the relatively extreme forms of body art practiced in Sub-Saharan Africa. One of these forms was scarification, a body modification procedure that offered a sculptural quality to the skin. Sometimes a colored pigment was added to the incisions forming a kind of tattoo, sometimes not. During this ethnographic trip, we will meet 3 ethnic groups and learn about their scarification and tattoo techniques, the techniques, meaning, aesthetics, current situation, and future… The trip will be accompanied by an Anthropologist and an expert in African body modifications.

Benin: Lake cities. voodoo and tattoed tribes

Very complete route through one of the most fascinating destinations in West Africa. The key is that the guide is Spanish but born in Benin, this cultural mix allows him to have access to the most isolated villages and to all the ceremonies and to be able to explain what we are experiencing. The trip is done in a comfortable minibus and we stay in nice hotels and also spend a couple of nights in tents so that we can experience the tribal world up close. The route runs through the south, center and north of the country to see various ethnic groups and landscapes.
